Elgar is widely regarded for his evocative and sometime personal music (particularly the Enigma Variations). This Elegy, though dedicated to Rev. R.H. Haddon, is widely regarded as having been written in memory of his friend August Jaeger, who died at the age of 49. Jaeger was also recognized in the movement Nimrod of the Enigma Variations - another moving work (often used by orchestras today as a memorial tribute).
